Story time themes this past year included visits from a clown, a campground ranger and Mother Goose all performed by me! The kids also enjoyed dancing to the beat of the Reading Rocks! Band again this year. We also had another successful year of Merry Money. The Library Elves helped shoppers with their Christmas purchases again this year. Both programs saw an increase in participation this year.

The Leesburg Library offered programming for our teens, too. Although we have a dedicated group of high school students who participate, we are also attempting to reach out to the junior high students.

We continue to network with local organizations to provide services and information to our patrons. We also partner with Fairfield Local Schools through participation in their Lions on Literacy events and my school visits to each elementary class to introduce our summer reading program theme.

Once again the library has benefited from the generosity and support provided by the many businesses and patrons of the Leesburg community. Their donations assist us in providing incentives for our summer reading program.

We would also like to thank patrons who have displayed items in our show case this year. This year we had patrons share their classic movie, frog and fishing lure collections. Our reading groups for teens and adults use the community room as well as our Knit Together group. It was with sadness that the Leesburg Library accepted the resignation of Myrna Reno this year. However, we were very happy to welcome a new employee, Lyn Tone. Lyn is energetic, friendly and hard-working and we appreciate her being a part of the Leesburg staff.

Although our number of employees has decreased in recent years, the Leesburg staff continues to work ardently and enthusiastically to assist our patrons with their informational needs. They truly demonstrate a dedication and commitment to the Leesburg community and the Highland County Library system. In , the Lynchburg Branch Library continued its mission of serving the community in many different ways. With the downturn in the economy, library staff spent more time helping patrons with vital online tasks such as filing unemployment, job searching, crafting resumes, and filling out tedious online applications that required even those unfamiliar with computers to acquire email addresses.

The staff rose to the challenge with more one-on-one assistance. We have also seen an increase in patrons taking online classes and needing an on-site proctor for exams. Our faxing services have also increased, allowing patrons to take care of important business without making long drives. Attendance at our regularly scheduled adult programs remains strong. The Pageturners book discussion group read a variety of titles, just about evenly divided between novels and non-fiction.

Our Knit-n-Stitch group continued throughout the year as a popular meeting place on Thursday evenings. She also traveled to the school to present information to a Girl Scout troop so that they could earn their local history badge. In the library, we presented information about Simon Kenton to a Cub Scout troop and helped a Boy Scout troop earn its library badge. Our meeting room provided a place for census testing, regular tutoring, test proctoring, and gatherings of the Lynchburg Historical Society, the new Neighborhood Watch group, Girl Scouts, and a Home School Curriculum Swap.

Local authors Elaine Williams and Mary V. Banks had book signings for a short story and a book, respectively. Congratulations to Beverly Wilkin for completing five years of library service, and Alice Williamson for completing ten years as our cleaning lady. We look forward to serving our patrons in In late and the news media has been abuzz with stories of Amazon selling more e-books than hardcover books and rumors that the hard copy printed book was dead or dying.

People like the idea of being able to carry a stack of 20 or more books with them on their portable device be it laptop, iPad, smart phone or e-book reader. Many of our audio book reading patrons love the idea of not having to shuffle through multiple CDs. From our library's point of view there are also many advantages to downloadable digital media. We have books, audio books and even a few videos that are shared between our SEO libraries with no shipping or handling charges and do not have to be touched, handled, or repaired by our staff at all.

Furthermore the statistics and ordering module is very good and items are available immediately to patrons after purchase. The help menus and the software from the site are both very good as well.
